President's Message

Congratulations are to be extended to Dr. Rosie Mayro for the organization and execution of one of GPSO's most successful annual meetings last November 2003. There were 182 attendees to hear Dr. Bob Boyd's presentation on "Predictability of Successful Orthodontic Results using Invisalign." Thanks also to the Invisalign, Unitek, GAC and Masel companies for their generous support of our meeting.
We are excited to announce this year’s meeting agenda.

Please mark your calendars:

Day: Wednesday
Date: November 10, 2004
Place: Union League of Philadelphia
140 S. Broad St.
Philadelphia, Pa 19102

Our future guest speaker will be Dr. Jack Sheridan and the title of his presentation will be "Essix Technology and Air-rotor Stripping". We extend our special appreciation to Dr. Joe Ghafari for his many years of dedication, commitment and sacrifice of personal time for the benefit of our society. We also would like to welcome our newest board member, Dr. Joe Persichetti. Dr. Vanessa Morenzi has updated and organized our website for your communication (www.gpso.org). Please let us know your thoughts or comments and possible suggestions for future speakers. Talk to your friends, classmates and colleagues, and plan to attend this year’s GPSO meeting together. It's always one of the most affordable and convenient continuing education programs you'll have the opportunity to attend.

Greetings from Delaware

We are pleased to welcome Dr Mark Fiss to our orthodontic community in Delaware. Dr. Fiss is associating with Dr. Ray Rafetto at his office on Limestone Road, Wilmington. Many of us attended the AAO meeting in Orlando and enjoyed the wide range of presentations given at the meeting. In February, the Delaware State Dental Society sponsored a “Give Kids a Smile Day” at our state President’s office, Dr. Blair Jones, in Lewes, DE. Thirty-five dentists, 19 hygienists and 50 dental auxiliaries participated in treating 158 children. Over $37,000 of free dentistry was delivered. Patterson Dental donated $5,000 worth of supplies to the event. The dentists of Delaware are committed to solving the problems of the underserved. Next year, we plan to expand the event to all counties in the state. We are looking forward to attending the GPSO annual CE course in November.

Temple Orthodontics

On April 20th and 21st we went through our accreditation. The last one was in 1997. Since then much has changed, but our current faculty is certainly our best and most impressive asset. Drs. W. Viechnicki, M. Mele, H.D. Nah, R. VanSciver, G. Jacobson, M. Ackerman, R Bray, R. Albright, E. Spannhake, M. Coats, K. Silverstein, V. Cacciafesta, G. Wiser, and many others deserve special recognition. They are the finest and most sophisticated in the nation. We are grateful, at Temple, for our good fortune. In large part due their presence we went through the accreditation process with flying colors and commendations.
We keep our tradition to publish extensively. Most notably, however, is Dr. Ackerman who is the recipient of the Dewel Award in 2004. This is the award given to the author of the most significant paper published in the Amer J Orthod Craniofac Orthod in the year preceding. Meanwhile, Temple faculty and alumni/ae continue to steer our specialty. Currently, Dr. Spannhake is the president of MASO, Dr. McCormick the president of GPSO, while Dr. Mele runs it year-after-year, Dr. Bray is the AAO trustee from MASO, Dr. Nah is our liaison to the Council on Scientific Affairs, Dr. Albright is the chairman of the MASO delegation, just to mention a few.

Our work in imaging technology and biotechnology continues. It won’t be long before we reach our lofty goal of affecting the future of orthodontics. But our facility is now showing it’s age. We will soon ask all our alumni and friends for substantial help towards our capital campaign to renovate the department; our goal is $2 million dollars. Our conversion to digital format in the graduate clinic has been successful, and it impresses the visitors to the department. We are grateful for the support of all our friends who care. And we aim to reciprocate by working to get even better.

Penn Update

As the year winds down, many positive changes are occurring at Penn. Renovations for the new clinic are in the works and a bright 2005 is close at hand. The faculty and residents have worked hard to keep the department on its level of excellence over the years. Many accolades go out to our residents and faculty but this year was a special one for Dr. J. Henry O’Hern who was distinguished at Penn for his 50 years of teaching excellence. Dr. O’Hern resides in Red Bank, New Jersey and teaches in our department every other week to devote his time to the residents. Dr. Jerry Sklaroff was awarded a similar commendation in 2002 for his 50th anniversary as a faculty member in the department as well. Dr. O’Hern and Sklaroff’s dedication to our department is second to none and their inspiration to the younger faculty and residents continues to grow stronger as the years pass. Along with their demanding clinical training, the following are the research projects for our current 2nd and 3rd year residents:

Dr. C. Matthew Forster
Dental Arch Widths of Untreated Adult Subjects with Low, Average, and High MP-SN Angles
Research Advisor: Dr. Chun-Hsi Chung

Dr. Ira Goldberg
Role of Cranial Base Flexure on Craniofacial Morphology in Three Planes of Space
Research Advisor: Dr. Chun-Hsi Chung

Dr. Grace Juan
A Pilot Study: Characterization of Bacterial Aerosol Levels Generated During Orthodontic Procedures – In vivo Assessments of Inhaled Airborne Debris
Research Advisor: Dr. Peter Greco

Dr. Maria Karpov
In vitro Bone Remodeling on Experimental Sol-gel Derived Bioactive Glasses
Research Advisor: Dr. Phoebe Leboy

Dr. Michael Kelly
Evaluation of Maxillary Arch Form and Palatal Vault Morphology in Patients with Palatally Displaced Canines
Research Advisor: Dr. Chun-Hsi Chung

Dr. M. Bancroft McMurphy
Periapical Response to Alternating Functional Stresses
Research Advisor: Dr. Alan Polson

Dr. Tomas Marrecau
The Effect of a Bonded Rapid Maxillary Expansion Appliance on the Maxillary and Mandibular Basal Bone in the Transverse Dimension
Research Advisor: Dr. Robert L. Vanarsdall

Dr. James Tsau
Nasal Soft Tissue Changes Following Surgically Assisted Rapid Palatal Expansion
Research Advisor: Dr. Chung-Hsi Chung

Stephen Tjoa received a second-place award of over forty projects submitted at the AAO meeting in Orlando for the Resident Clinician Scholars Program-Scientific Award presented at the ‘Legends in Orthodontics’ Luncheon. Stephen also received the Graduate Student Award during the Oral Health Fair. His research presentation was "Bone-targeted expression of a Crouzon mutation (C278F-FGFR2) in transgenic mice induces premature fusion of cranial sutures (craniosynotosis), but not shortening of the cranial base."

The 51st Annual Alumni Meeting of the Department of Orthodontics of the University of Pennsylvania will be held on Friday, October 1, 2004. Dr. Robert A. Penna, Class of 1996, from Newark, Delaware, will preside. The place of the meeting will be the University of Pennsylvania Museum of Archaeology and Anthropology, located on the University of Pennsylvania Campus at 33rd and Spruce Streets, Philadelphia, PA.
The Alumni Association is extremely pleased and honored to announce that the speaker for this meeting will be Dr. Richard P. McLaughlin from San Diego, California. Dr. McLaughlin’s lecture is entitled, “Diagnosis, Treatment Planning and Treatment Mechanics” and will explore nonsurgical, surgical and difficult, borderline cases with the intent of developing a basis for treatment decisions providing the most esthetic facial result. Emphasis on patient history, clinical examination and subsequent treatment planning rationale will be presented, especially in correction of Class II malocclusions.

The day prior to this meeting will be our Twenty-fourth Annual Clinic Day. This will be held in the Department Clinic all day Thursday, September 30, 2004. Faculty, alumni, residents and guests participate. Outstanding effort and the results there from will be on display. For additional information regarding Clinic/Alumni day, please contact Barbara DelRegino (Department Secretary) at 215-898-5910.

Albert Einstein Orthodontic Residency Program

At the time this article was submitted, the third year residents, Casey Johnson, Ed Silverman and Yana Volfson, were approaching graduation. They performed admirably during the past three years and we are especially proud of their accomplishments. All three residents presented their research findings at the AAO meeting in Orlando after presenting to the faculty. Casey Johnson presented “A Comparison of Two Self-
Etching Primers to a Traditional Two-Step Etch and Prime System In-vivo”. Ed Silverman and Yana Volfson presented, “Correlation Between the Goslon Yardstick and Cephalometric Values in Patients with Clefts.” The third year residents were also involved with a limited clinical study, “Speed Supercable Archwires Used in Edgewise Appliances”. A poster-board on this topic was presented at the MASO meeting in Atlantic City in November and an updated poster board version was presented at the AAO meeting under the category of the AAO/Dentsply Resident Clinician Scholars Program. Ed Silverman represented his fellow classmates.

In continuing a practice set five years ago by the three Philadelphia residency programs, this year the Einstein residents were responsible for organizing the fifth annual Philly-DOC meeting in March. The third year residents led this year's effort and were assisted by the first year residents, Mark Huls, Tony Pasquale and Clay Vander Wall. The speaker was Roger Hill, M.B.A., A.S.A. from the Blair, McGill and Hill group. The title of the presentation was “Practice Transitions”. This annual meeting represents a collegial gathering of residents and faculty from Einstein, Penn and Temple. It is a wonderful experience and appreciation is extended to Dr. Brian Amy, a Temple graduate who led the effort to organize this meeting in 1999.
